The start of 2024 has seen an increase in activity across the legal market in both Hong Kong & Singapore as firms are making strategic investments at partner level across a range of practice areas.
A number of counsel and senior associates have successfully made the step up to Partner as part of a move. These included Ryan Tou from Allen & Overy joining White & Case as Partner and Benjamin Lohr returning to HSF from Clifford Chance.
The PRC firms are continuing to grow in Hong Kong with hires into their capital market and corporate teams and it is anticipated that other firms will follow suit throughout the year.
Further there have been in-house counsel moving back to private practice as well as very senior partners moving in-house for the first time both in Hong Kong and Singapore.
Law firms are currently looking at headcount for the year ahead and there are signs that there will be hiring needs at associate level in various practice groups. Whilst we are unlikely to see dramatic hiring needs across the capital markets space until later in the year there are currently active roles across litigation, regulatory and M&A teams. However given the lack of opportunities for many associates during 2023 competition for roles is fierce and excellent soft skills as well as strong technical knowledge will be essential for all positions. Law firms are currently able to take their time to ensure they are hiring the best fit for their teams and thorough preparation for interviews will be essential.
If you are considering a move this year or would simply like to discuss the market in more detail please do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.
